The first World Series took place in 1903, between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Americans, who later became the Red Sox. Boston won.

​

The World Series was cancelled the next year, because the National League’s New York Giants, now in San Francisco, refused to play their bitter rivals the Boston Americans.

 

The Giants owner claimed that the American League was not a real league and went on to "declared” his team the 1904 world champions.
